Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV)

Soon to be running between Turin and Salerno, the NTV was unveiled (okay, about a month ago) in Italy. The service uses the French AGV and is scheduled to start in Mark 2012. There’s no doubt that the train looks stunning inside and outside, and most importantly is the first use of the AGV on main line operation. According to SMH…

NTV plans to run up to 50 services a day as the first operator to use the AGV high-speed trains built by French transport and power engineering group Alstom.

There’s an interesting article at Inhabitat (and Gizmodo) about the 10,500 hp electric locos that work in Switzerland – the Re 620. They really don’t look like they could haul very much given their relative size. Impressive. | Inhabitat

Lupkov Pass

Over the weekend we spent time next to the rail line that makes up part of the Lupkov Pass (?upków Pass, Polish: Prze??cz ?upkowska, Slovak: Lupkovský priesmyk). We hiked for about one hour before reaching the tunnel. This is quite a remote location, even so there were at least seven freight trains during the entire day – pretty good when considering that what you see in this video constitutes the only locomotives that run along this line. Whilst it was slightly disappointing that we didn’t get any trains going through the tunnel it was a good trip regardless.
