After many (many) years of thinking about, not having enough time, and generally being in the wrong place, I have finally commenced not one but two railway projects. The intention for this part of the site is to document as often as possible the progress of both projects.
The smaller scale project will be using OO gauge/scale. There has been a rather convoluted road to reach this decision. I lived in Germany for many years and thought that was a good opportunity to start with the railway since there were plenty of model shops around and Germany seems very well served by model railway companies. So I bought HO scale track, then moved. That put that idea on hold. Now back in the UK I thought it was about time to resurrect the project. The issue with OO scale is the space required to build the type of layout I am imagining – which I found out after I built the first part of the baseboard. I know there are many excellent layouts that use OO that are very small in size; however, my plans are to run full train consists rather than compromising of having a HST with just carriages, for example mean that I have to plan rather differently.
- The OO Gauge Layout project
The second project is the 16mm garden railway project.
Whilst much simpler in layout design, this project obviously requires a little more space to bring to fruition. I’ve decide to go with SM32 track because this (from what I understand) more in line with narrow gauge scales, which is my preference. Currently I am building up the rolling stock, which consists of 5 scratch built coal wagons. I’ve got an articulated Bagnall diesel on order (which is taken far too long to deliver), and have my eyes on several locos from both Roundhouse and Accucraft.
