China has started building its proposed Asia wide high speed network. About a year ago they published plans for a network that would go from Beijing to Singapore with plans to extend to Europe via Russia. Now they have actually started to build the thing, with the first section reaching out to Laos – which interestingly only has two miles of railway line. How much of this network will actually be built remains to be seen; however, the effort can only be applauded as I would really like to see the pan-European high speed network come together. The thought of going from Beijing to Singapore via high-speed sleeper train is very much appealing and I am already planning my holiday when that happens.
