Subway Architecture

The fabulous design website Designboom has a second instalment in subway/metro/underground design.

One particular design that caught my eye was the metro in Porto, how cool do these units look and the station too is a fabulous example of urban design providing shelter and light.

This reminds me of the the new extension to the red line in Prague. The station at Strizkov is almost at ground level, this allowed the designers to add a glass roof and open up the station. It is all too easy for designers to make the stations functional without allowing their creativity edge to come out. As with most underground metros, confinement can make you feel uneasy so it is good to see examples that use a little imagination and allow the traveller to feel free.
