Passenger numbers seem to be on the increase, at least in two parts of Europe and at different extremes. In Switzerland, the authorities are making big changes to routes and services after 2006 provided a record breaking year of 285 million passengers (Swiss population is 7.5 million) means they need to plan ahead and provide even more services for an already fabulous rail network.
On a different scale, the London Docklands railway is starting a 200 million GBP project to increase the capacity of trains from 2 to 3 carriages. Given that they needed to increase the length of trains and thus platforms you’d think they would future proof it by making platforms accessible to 4 carriage trains. Maybe, maybe not 🙂
